Virgin Pullets, Chickens and Sparrowgrass

from Birds by Gordon Mooney and Barbara Mooney

/

about

A pullet is the word for a young hen under one year old. The tune is from the 17th century Playford Collection and may refer to a young chicken or a young girl. Sparrowgrass is misheard 'asparagus'. The title may mean chickens on a plate with asparagus. All domestic fowl are descended from the Red Jungle Fowl brought to Britain by the Romans as fighting birds.
