from Birds by Gordon Mooney and Barbara Mooney

/

about

Once a common bird in Britain it is now only found in the Hebrides. Modern agricultural methods have led to the destruction of the birds nest, eggs and chicks. The corncrake has a voice which resembles a piece of wood being drawn against a comb and its Latin name 'Crex Crex' echoes the sound. The tune is from 19th Century Scotland a song was popular among mining communities. The Corncrake is a Red List species
