The Blackcocks of Berriedale (Reel of the Blackcocks)

from Birds by Gordon Mooney and Barbara Mooney

/

about

The Blackcock or Black Grouse has suffered a catastrophic population decline over the last 20 years due to habitat loss and overgrazing. The Blackcocks have a remarkable courtship display which takes place at communal display grounds called leks. At a lek the cocks joust with other cocks. The fighting is mostly mock with birds hopping up and down with fanned tails. Their antics resemble a dance and has given inspiration to an ancient Highland Reel from Skye. The Reel of the Blackcocks is one of the oldest Scottish tunes, however, we have given it a very modern treatment using MIDI pipes, electric guitar and drums.
The Black Grouse is a Red List species
