about

In Gaelic Capercaillie means "Old man of the woods". This is the largest of the grouse family and is to be found in pine forests of Scotland. By the end of the 18th Century the bird was extinct in Scotland but it was re-introduced in the 1830's for sporting estates. The song of the male Capercaillie is one of the weirdest sounds in the world of birds. It begins with a rattle, continues with a sound like drawing a cork from a wine bottle and pouring liquid and then ends with a sound like grinding a knife. This jaunty pipe tune was composed by Captain J. Peterson to honour the Scottish folk band who have taken the birds name. The UK population has declined so rapidly that the bird is in real danger of extinction for the second time. Red List species.
